Okay first off I fully admit that the turkey I bought was to big.
I don't do turkey often. Frankly none of us like it much. The decision to have it came about because Max wanted to try cranberry sauce. I suggested several meats it would go good with. We decided we would give turkey a go even though it is notorious for being bland and dry.
So I have heard many people say to use brine. Also we have fried turkeys but that was with friends that owned a turkey fryer and they live in Florida now. It seemed brine was the way to go. Clearly the huge uber bowl I thought would be big enough was not even close. We found this out a 8pm tonight. I took a trip to Target and bought some ginormous Ziploc bags and brown sugar which I ran out of because I had to make cookies because it rained ( I'll save that story for another date).
As you see in the picture the turkey fits great in the bag. We were pleased that we solved the problem. I put the herbs and fruit in the bag along with the brine solution. Then I closed it and put in in the bowl to transfer it to the fridge. I set the bowl on the counter to do something (I have no idea what) and when I came back there was water all over the counter and floor. then I realized it was not water. The bag had a hole in it. What a huge mess. We put the bowl and turkey in the sink and I cleaned up the floor while John contemplated what to do next. We decided to try a new bag. We heaved the bowl (turkey + solution= very heavy) to the porch, just in case, and lifted out the turkey put in into the new bag then poured the brine over. We carefully lifted the bag. Nothing leaking. Now it is 9pm and both John and I are quite tired and not at all cheerful about Thanksgiving. We did not trust the bag at all and decided the best container to put the bag in was a cooler. We then added ice and it is now in the garage.
I'm all for leaving it there and making a pork roast but I think as a good lesson to the kids in dealing with adversity and problem solving we are going to roast our uber turkey anyway.
I will try and take more picture of dinner as it progresses.

We had problems finding something big enough for the mere turkey breast we bought. It's actually the back and the chest. We finally settled on the biggest stock pot. I don't know how a whole turkey could ever be brined but you may have found out the perfect container.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Eeewww! Happy Thanksgiving anyway!
When I opened my turkey breast after thawing, there was brown goo everywhere--the gravy packet wasn't sealed. Thank heaven the outer package was! At least it was somewhat contained!
Sorry to hear about your turkey trouble, and it was a bizarre way to find you, but I have good news for John - I just got a royalty check for Animal Crackers being republished in that text book Gary White co-wrote (Music in our World). I don't have you folks' contact information anymore, so could you send it to EnvGames at msn dot com? Thank you!
